Classic rugs for a unique refinement of your interior
Classic rugs provide a timeless look and form a beautiful basis for any interior. By installing a classic carpet you can quickly and elegantly create a cozy atmosphere. A classic rug is an addition to any living style. It complements a classically furnished room and can transform a trendy interior into an inviting modern classic interior.Classic carpets look great everywhere: they provide a warm welcome in the hall, complete the styling of your living room, create a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom and add prestige to office spaces.
Persian and oriental rugs
The best-known classic rugs are Persian and oriental rugs. Often all rugs with an oriental appearance are called Persian rugs, but this is not correct. Only hand-knotted rugs from former Persia, now called Iran, may bear the name Persian rugs. A rug from Turkey, India or Pakistan, often in the same colors and with similar motifs, symbols and images, should be called an oriental rug.
Origin of Persian carpets
Persian carpets are known as one of the oldest types of carpets. In ancient Persia, nomadic peoples engaged in the art of tying clothes as a hobby or to provide for their livelihood. The carpets were made on a floor loom. That is a loom that was collapsible and easy to move. People used the rugs to keep warm, to insulate their tents and to decorate temples, among other things.
How are Persian rugs made?
Persian rugs are made with a Persian knot: a fine knot that takes up little space and makes it possible to create fine patterns and flowing lines. This distinguishes a Persian rug from other classic rugs. Four different types of looms can be used to produce a rug: a horizontal type, a fixed vertical type, a vertical Tabriz type and a vertical type with roller beams. Other supplies include scissors, a beater and a knife.
Long-haired wool from mountain sheep is preferably used. The sheep are sheared, after which the wool can be cleaned and spun. Then you can start tying. The production of one carpet can take months or even years, with several people, often from the same family, taking turns. When the rug is ready, it is thoroughly cleaned and dried. The most beautiful specimens are then included in our collection.
Knotting is a precise and delicate work that requires a lot of concentration. The combination of a strict machining process and the use of the best materials results in a high-quality product with a long lifespan. Persian carpets distinguish between rugs with a pile, which forms the top of the rug, and without a pile, the so-called kilims.
Characteristics of handmade Persian carpets
With a classic rug you can create a completely different atmosphere in your home in no time. With a rug you can create a spatial division or create cohesion in a certain part of a living room. You can do this with a rug according to your wishes in terms of color, shape and size. If you take into account the following characteristics of a hand-knotted Persian carpet, you can be sure that you will have a unique, stylish eye-catcher for your home and not a machine-made rug:
• a Persian carpet has imperfections. However, that doesn't mean it isn't a perfect rug! The inequalities arose during the many hours of work that went into the production of the rug. You can see this, for example, in a design with vertical or horizontal patterns. It may happen that one or more lines are not completely straight. It is precisely these imperfections that give the rug character and prove the uniqueness of the rug.
• a Persian carpet can show asymmetry. It is mainly the asymmetry by which experts recognize an authentic Persian carpet. A recurring symbol in the rug may look slightly different in different places. This also has to do with the many hours of manual labor that went into the rug.
• Persian carpets are hand-knotted. You can see these knots by folding a piece of the rug back. You can then look into the piles of the rug and see the buttons. These knots are not visible on machine-made rugs. It should be noted that the flat woven kilims do not have buttons, but that these rugs are made by hand.
• an unmistakable feature of a hand-knotted rug is the finish of the edges. A Persian carpet is not a real Persian carpet without the fringes, which are formed by knotting the warp threads together. The fringes are on the two short sides of the rug and are intended to hold the buttons together.
• Persian carpets are never made of synthetic materials, but always of cotton, silk and wool.
• a hand-knotted rug is more expensive than a machine-made rug. It is very labor intensive to make a high-quality hand-knotted rug, which naturally means the price is higher.
How a classic carpet warms your interior
Long ago, classical Persian rugs were used to decorate churches, palaces and temples. Even today you often see Persian rugs in prestigious and public buildings. The high knot density guarantees high quality that will last for years, even when the rug is frequently walked on. A classic rug is an asset to any floor, but is also beautiful as a wall decoration. This makes a Persian rug an asset to any room. The deep, warm colors attract attention and provide a chic look. Because the rugs are handmade, no two rugs are the same, so you always have a unique item at home. The wide variety of designs, color combinations, shapes and sizes ensures that you can always find a rug that perfectly suits your living style.
