Classic rugs for a unique refinement of your interior
Classic rugs provide a timeless look and form a beautiful basis for any interior. By placing a classic carpet, you can quickly and elegantly create a cozy atmosphere. A classic rug is an addition to any living style. It complements a classically furnished room and can transform a trendy interior into an inviting modern classic interior. Classic rugs come into their own everywhere: they provide a warm welcome in the hall, complete the styling of your living room, provide a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom and give office spaces prestige.
Persian and oriental rugs
The most famous classic rugs are Persian and oriental rugs. Often all rugs with an oriental look are called Persian rugs, but this is not correct. Only hand-knotted rugs from former Persia, now called Iran, may bear the name Persian rugs. A rug from Turkey, India or Pakistan, often in the same colours and with similar motifs, symbols and images, should be called an oriental carpet.
Origin of Persian carpets
Persian carpets are known as one of the oldest types of carpets. In ancient Persia, nomadic peoples engaged in the art of weaving carpets as a hobby or to earn a living. The carpets were made on a ground loom. This is a loom that was collapsible and easy to move. People used the carpets to keep warm, to insulate their tents and to decorate temples.
How are Persian rugs made?
Persian rugs are made with a Persian knot: a fine knot that takes up little space and that makes it possible to create fine patterns and flowing lines. This is what distinguishes a Persian carpet from other classic rugs. Four different types of looms can be used to make a rug: a horizontal type, a fixed vertical type, a vertical type Tabriz and a vertical type with roller beams. Other supplies are scissors, a beater and a knife.
Preferably, long-haired wool from mountain sheep is used. The sheep are shorn, after which the wool can be cleaned and spun. Then the knotting can begin. The production of one carpet can take months to years, with several people, often from the same family, taking turns. When the carpet is finished, it is thoroughly cleaned and dried. The most beautiful examples are then included in our collection.
The knotting is a precise and delicate work that requires a lot of concentration. The combination of a strict processing and the use of the best materials results in a high-quality product with a long lifespan. Persian carpets are divided into carpets with pile, which forms the top of the carpet, and without pile, the so-called kilims.
Features of Handmade Persian Carpets
With a classic rug you can create a completely different atmosphere in your home in no time. With a rug you can create a spatial division or create coherence in a certain part of a living room. You can do this with a rug according to your wishes in terms of color, shape and size.If you take into account the following characteristics of a hand-knotted Persian carpet, you can be sure that you will bring a unique, stylish eye-catcher into your home and not a machine-made rug:
• a Persian carpet has imperfections. However, that does not mean that it is not a perfect carpet! The irregularities have arisen during the many hours of work that went into the production of the carpet. You can see this, for example, in a design with vertical or horizontal patterns. It can happen that one or more lines are not completely straight. It is precisely these imperfections that give the carpet character and that prove the uniqueness of the carpet.
• a Persian carpet can show asymmetry. It is mainly the asymmetry that experts use to recognize an authentic Persian carpet. A recurring symbol in the carpet can look slightly different in different places. This also has to do with the many hours of manual labor that went into the carpet.
• Persian rugs are hand-knotted. You can see these knots by folding back a piece of the rug. You can then look into the pile of the rug and see the knots. With machine-made rugs, these knots are not visible. It should be noted that with flat-woven kilims there are no knots, but these rugs are made by hand.
• an unmistakable characteristic of a hand-knotted rug is the finishing of the edges. A Persian rug is not a real Persian rug without the fringes, which are formed by knotting the warp threads together. The fringes are on the two short sides of the rug and are intended to keep the knots together.
• Persian carpets are never made of synthetic materials, but always of cotton, silk and wool.
• a hand-knotted rug is more expensive than a machine-made rug. It is very labor-intensive to make a high-quality hand-knotted rug, which naturally makes the price higher.
How a classic carpet warms your interior
Long ago, classic Persian rugs were used to decorate churches, palaces and temples. Even today, Persian rugs are often found in prestigious and public buildings. The high knot density guarantees high quality that will last for years, even when the rug is walked on frequently. A classic rug is an asset to any floor, but is also beautiful as a wall decoration. This makes a Persian rug an asset to any room. The deep, warm colours attract attention and provide a chic look. Because the rugs are handmade, no two rugs are the same and therefore you always have a unique piece in your home. The large variety of designs, colour combinations, shapes and sizes ensures that there is always a rug that fits your living style perfectly.
