What makes a vintage rug special?
A vintage rug is not a mass-produced item. It's a carpet with a past: hand-knotted by Turkish weavers, often decades ago, and then carefully restored and low-sheared for a contemporary look. This process gives each rug a unique character—subtly faded hues, polished patterns, and that typical vintage softness that cannot be replicated.
Vintage or retro—what's the difference?
In practice, the terms vintage rug and retro rug are often used interchangeably and mean the same thing: a carpet with that characteristic 60s, 70s, or 80s look, often with muted colors, an abstract pattern, and softened wool. Strictly speaking, ‘vintage’ refers to carpets that are truly 20+ years old (like ours), while ‘retro’ can also mean newer rugs made in a vintage style. At Lavinta, you'll only find real hand-knotted pieces—no reproductions.
Hand-knotted vs. hand-woven
Most vintage rugs in our collection are hand-knotted: knot by knot, often hundreds of thousands per rug. These are the classic Turkish and Persian carpets. Hand-woven rugs (like kilims) are flatter and lighter, ideal as a low-profile rug. Both techniques are centuries-old and hand-executed.
Which interiors suit a vintage or retro rug?
Surprisingly many. A vintage rug is a natural connector: it breaks the austerity of modern furniture, fills empty spaces in a minimalist interior, and fits effortlessly into boho, scandi, industrial, and classic styles. A red vintage rug under a grey designer sofa? That works. A pale beige pattern in a white living room? Exciting and warm at the same time.
What size do I need?
For a living room, a 200x300 cm rug is usually the minimum standard to encompass a sofa and coffee table together. In a dining room, choose a size where the chairs still remain on the rug even when pushed back (often 240x340 cm or larger). For a bedroom, something from 170x240 cm works. Doubting? Sustainable and unique
Buying a vintage rug is a conscious choice. No new production, no synthetic fibers, no mass chain—instead, an existing handmade piece that is reused. Wool is naturally durable, stain-resistant, and lasts for decades. Most of our rugs are 30-60 years old and are still in top condition.
