A kilim is a flat-woven rug — made by weaving wool or cotton threads through vertical warp threads, without knots. The result is a thin, light, and flexible rug without pile, with geometric patterns that function as visual narratives. Each region in Turkey, the Caucasus, and Persia has its own symbols: protection, fertility, water, peace. A kilim is therefore not just decoration, but cultural heritage.
Kilim vs. hand-knotted rug
A hand-knotted vintage rug has pile (the soft top) and is heavy. A kilim is flat, lightweight, and usable on both sides. Practically, this means: easier to move, simple to roll up, and suitable for under a dining table where chairs won't get caught in a high pile. Also ideal as a rug-on-rug (over a large low-pile base rug).
Which interiors suit a kilim?
Kilims are the natural partner for boho, eclectic, and layered living, but also fit surprisingly well in modern, minimalist spaces as a color accent. Hang one on the wall as a tapestry, lay one in the hallway as a runner, or combine a few small kilims in the bedroom.
Maintenance
A kilim is wonderfully low-maintenance. Regular vacuuming (without a beater bar), blotting stains immediately, and occasionally turning it over for even wear. Wool naturally repels dirt, and the flat structure means no pile fibers collect. If you beat it outside once a year, it will last for decades.
Which size should I choose?
Kilims come in all sorts of sizes. For under a dining table, preferably choose a size that is wide enough even when the chairs are pulled out. For the hallway, a narrow runner works well. For the bedroom, two small kilims along the bed are a charming choice. Our size guide with visual examples will help you further.

What makes a Kelim special?
Flat woven by hand
Unlike high-pile or knotted rugs, kilims are flat-woven. This makes them lighter, easier to move, and perfect for both floors and walls. Their traditional weaving technique creates a strong, durable structure – ideal for everyday use.
Rich patterns with meaning
Every kilim tells a story. The patterns are often symbolic—with motifs representing fertility, protection, or happiness. This makes each rug unique and personal. No mass production, but true craftsmanship with soul.
