How to use the size calculator?
The calculator above works in 4 steps. You choose the room, fill in the dimensions, tell us a bit about your furniture, and get an immediate recommended size plus visualization. The suggestion is based on standard design rules used by interior designers — tailored to the Lavinta vintage rug collection.
Why the right rug size is so important
A rug that is too small makes a room appear optically smaller — which is counter-intuitive for most people. The rug acts as a visual anchor that ties together the seating or dining area. Too small, and the furniture seems to float; too large, and the room's proportions disappear. The rules of thumb this calculator uses:
- Living room: at least the front legs of the sofa on the rug, or everything on it with 60 cm around it.
- Dining room: 60 cm around the table so that chairs remain on the rug even when pushed back.
- Bedroom: 50-60 cm around the bed, or 2/3 of the bed covered from the foot end.
- Hallway & runner: 30-40 cm free at the beginning and end, long and narrow for visual length.
