What makes a rug 'modern'?

A modern rug is characterized by its understated lines, limited color palette, and functional appearance. No busy border patterns or saturated hues like classic Persian carpets — instead, neutral tones, abstract forms, and clean compositions. This allows a modern rug to combine effortlessly with designer furniture, concrete floors, wood, and glass.

Vintage with a modern aesthetic

At Lavinta, our 'modern' rugs are often vintage carpets that gain a contemporary character through washing and low-shearing. The original handcraft remains — knotted by Turkish artisans — but the look is sleeker, colors are more subdued, and the surface is flatter. The best of both worlds: authentic handcraft and a modern look.

Which interior styles does it suit?

A modern rug comes into its own best in Scandinavian interiors, Japandi, minimalist living, industrial, and modern classic styles. Under a designer dining table, in a bright loft, or as a focal point in a white living room. Its strength lies in the combination: a rug with character under sleek furniture gives your interior the sophistication it would otherwise lack.

Which colors work best?

For a modern interior, you often opt for neutral tones — grey, beige, light, black, or soft powdery colors. If you want a single color accent in an otherwise understated space, a subtle blue or rust pattern can make a statement without becoming too busy.

Which size fits?

For a modern interior, a rug that completely 'embraces' the seating area or dining table usually works best. Count on 200x300 cm minimum for a living room, larger if you have a bigger sofa or longer dining table. Prefer certainty? Check out our size guide with visual examples per room.
