Wool or synthetic — why a wool rug always wins

Walking through a carpet store can be confusing. One rug is made of wool, another of 'polypropylene blend', and a third of 'artificial silk'. The prices also vary considerably. Which material should you choose?

In this article, we compare wool and synthetic materials based on the 6 factors that really matter. Spoiler: for a rug that lasts decades, there's only one logical choice.

1. Durability and lifespan

Wool: A wool carpet lasts 30-60 years, sometimes longer. Our vintage rugs are often 40-60 years old and still in excellent condition. Wool fibers are naturally elastic—they compress but spring back.

Synthetic (polypropylene, polyester, nylon): Typically lasts 3-7 years with normal use. The fibers flatten under pressure and do not spring back. After a few years, the rug feels 'dead'.

Winner: Wool—by a factor of 5 to 10 longer.

2. Stain resistance

Wool: Naturally contains lanolin, a fatty layer that repels water and stains. Spill a glass of wine? You have a few minutes before it soaks in—often enough time to blot it away.

Synthetic: Most synthetic fibers are porous and absorb liquids immediately. A stain becomes almost instantly permanent. Some more expensive synthetic carpets have an added stain-resistant treatment, but it wears off after a year or two.

Winner: Wool—by a large margin.

3. Comfort and feel

Wool: Warm underfoot, resilient, breathable. Has 'life'—every step feels soft.

Synthetic: Often feels cold and plastic-like, especially with cheaper variants. Lacks that natural spring.

Winner: Wool.

4. Fire safety

An often overlooked but important point:

Wool: Naturally flame retardant. Wool fibers do not melt but char slowly. A cigarette falls on a wool carpet? Limited damage—often a small charred spot.

Synthetic: Melts under high temperatures into hard plastic droplets. A cigarette or iron can melt a direct hole that is beyond repair.

Winner: Wool.

5. Climate regulation

Wool: Breathable and insulating at the same time. Retains heat in winter, cools in summer. Works well with underfloor heating. Absorbs excess moisture from the air and releases it later—contributes to a pleasant indoor climate.

Synthetic: Not breathable. Moisture remains on the surface and can lead to foul odors or mold. Creates static electricity in dry weather (the familiar 'shock' when touched).

Winner: Wool.

6. Environment and sustainability

Wool: Renewable resource (sheep grow a new fleece annually), biodegradable, no petroleum needed. A vintage wool carpet is doubly sustainable—existing materials, no new production.

Synthetic: Made from petroleum. Not biodegradable (300+ years). Microplastics in production and during wear and tear.

Winner: Wool.

Why is synthetic so popular then?

Two reasons: price and mass production. Synthetic carpets cost a fraction. For a temporary solution (student housing, children's room, short rental period), this can be logical.

But if you are looking for a carpet that lasts—for your new home, a beautiful gift, an investment in your interior—then wool is a no-brainer. At Lavinta, we see customers who bought a vintage rug 10+ years ago and still use it daily.

The vintage bonus

Wool vintage rugs have one extra advantage: they have already seen decades of use and are 'proven durable'. A new wool carpet is theoretically good; a 50-year-old vintage carpet has already proven its worth.

Plus: over time, the wool has become softer and more lustrous. The typical 'vintage softness' cannot be bought—it is created by time.

Conclusion

On almost every criterion, wool beats synthetic—by a wide margin. It costs a bit more initially, but if you divide by 30 years of use instead of 5, you'll be better off with wool. And you get something back that synthetic can never provide: character that only time can bring.

When in doubt, always ask: 'is this 100% wool or a mix?' Avoid terms like 'wool blend' or 'wool-look'—these are almost always synthetic rugs with at most 10% wool.
